- "Courtney?" Again Dad shook his head. "No Samantha, Courtney is way too young to be married or have kids, she's only twelve. It was just the other day that she got her first period. It was last Saturday, I'd gone to see my sister and brother-in-law and their kids over in Para Hills, and I took Gary and Courtney to see their cousins. Then on the drive home Courtney gets all upset and starts crying saying that she's started her first period, and I have to pull over in busy traffic in pouring rain so she can take care of things."
- One of the amazing things about Dad like many other dementia patients was that while most days he didn't know what planet he was on, sometimes he could remember random days from the past in amazing detail. The Saturday he described was very accurate despite it taking place in 1989 and therefore separated from the present day by 28 years. It was also lucky that he hadn't brought up this memory in front of my sister herself, as given that she started her first period in the car with only her Dad and 14-year-old brother there, Courtney's menarche was not a pleasant memory for her.
- Dad reflected further on the day his daughter made the transition from a girl to a young woman, and grumbled. "Courtney is such a silly girl, why couldn't she have started her period when my sister was there to help her, or waited until we got home and her mother was there?
